Job Description:

Job Overview 

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a licensed physician assistant (PA) or certified acute care advanced practice nurse (ACNP) who works under the direct supervision of an Intensivist and is responsible for providing clinical care for oncology patients and coordination of services provided by APPs in his/her section of their department. The individual who holds this position will exemplify the Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s mission, vision and values and act in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines. 

In this role, assessment, communication skills, and problems solving techniques are used to deliver quality care and to facilitate physician productivity. Overall responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

  • Provides appropriate patient care for patients with hematologic and oncologic malignancies in the ICU or step-down unit to include recording patient medical history and physical assessment, developing therapeutic care plan, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting test results, discharge planning and providing accurate medical record documentation. 
  • Educates patients in areas of procedures, pharmacology, self-management of side effects and available community resources. 
  • Provides symptom management for treatment related toxicities. 
  • Facilitates communication regarding goals of care including end of life decision making. 
  • Collaborates and effectively communicates with referring physicians/clinicians and stakeholders. 

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the position will perform tasks as directed by the supervising physician and the clinic supervisor or manager.  In addition, the position performs only those clinical tasks he/she is capable of and within the scope of the supervising physician. The APP comply with all hospital by-laws, rules, and regulations;  has all entries in the medical record co-signed by the attending physician; prescribes Category III and above drugs as indicated by state/federal licensing, provides orders under supervision of physician during assigned "on call" duty; performs rounds in Infusion Center or Inpatient Unit and writes progress notes as appropriate or instructed by MD and manager. 

The APP also orders medication and develops treatment and evaluations with supervising physician, as well as acts as liaison between patient, RNs and physicians 

Demonstrates professional commitment through mandatory attendance at continuing education programs, independent reading, and other professional activities. Assists in development and participating in departmental and interdisciplinary quality. improvement programs. Assist with training and orienting staff as needed. Attends team meetings, staff meetings, team huddles, and other meetings as requested; participate in meeting and team roles as requested. Assists with special projects as directed

Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety goals relevant to the work environment. 

Demonstrates knowledge of hospital variance reporting system and appropriate management procedures for unexpected occurrences 

Demonstrates appropriate response to organizational disaster codes 

Completes annual department Hazardous Communications Training 

Completes required Net Learning modules 

Consistently follows organizational guidelines for effective hand hygiene 

As indicated, follows guidelines for standard and transmission-based precautions 

Education/Experience Level 

Current Georgia RN license and Georgia Advance Practice-NP licenses required. 

Completed a program approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education of the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education for the training of Physician Assistants; or Education programs on the Armed Forces of the United States, Public Health Service, or their successor agencies which meet the criteria specified by NCCPA. Successfully passing National Certification Examination 

Maintains required number of CME hours as required by the professional organization 

Current BLS/CPR and ACLS Certifications required. 

Pay Range

$47.20 - $77.70

Placement within the identified pay range is based on individual and market factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, credentials (including licenses and certifications), geographic location, market competition, skill set (including market availability of required skills), assigned/anticipated job tasks, and level of responsibility.  These factors are considered without regard to an individual’s status as a member of any protect group pursuant to federal, state, and/or local law.
